The Shot I Always Wanted: A Hummingbird Frozen in Time

A Ruby-throated Hummingbird hovers mid-flight near vibrant orange firebush blooms, its wings spread wide and frozen in motion against a soft, blurred green background.

“The greatest achievement was at first, and for a time, but a dream.” — Napoleon Hill

For as long as I can remember, photographing a hummingbird in flight was on my list — one of those shots that feels almost mythical until the moment it actually happens. These tiny birds move with such speed and precision that chasing them with a lens feels more like a game of chance than skill. But patience has a way of paying off.

This Ruby-throated Hummingbird was working the firebush blooms when everything finally aligned — the light, the angle, the freeze of those wings mid-stroke. It’s the kind of moment that reminds you why you pick up the camera in the first place.

Some dreams are worth every missed shot along the way.
